COW TRIAL
The trial consists of a task, comprising four riders from the same team who work together to cut four preselected cows from a herd located in a special containment zone, one at a time in a pre-defined order (one per rider) and herding them into a demarcated zone which is separate from the rest of the herd.
Teams must be registered for this event at least up until to the time of the beginning of the dressage trial.
The registrations for the National Championship will be effected in accordance with the regulations of the referred to championship.
The four team members will perform their tasks individually with each rider cutting one cow. In each trial, the other three members of the team will help to maintain the herd in the containment zone. They may not
overstep the line of the zone demarcating the action of fellow team members.
After the animal has been cut and oversteps over the containment line, one or more riders may help the rider to accompany the animal in the direction of a specially defined location.
Cows will be identified (by colour or numbers), all of which will be different.
The draw in respect of the colour of the animals to be cut will be realised after the animals have been placed inside the containment zone in the presence of the team leaders, as will the order of competition of teams.
The deadline for cutting a cow will be three minutes. After this period has elapsed, competitors will be eliminated and no points awarded.
The event will be timed from when the rider enters the herd containment zone (foreparts of horse). The trial will end as soon as the animal’s foreparts cross the special demarcation line. The line may be replaced by a goalpost comprising e.g. two drums.

1. Riding Arena
The cow trial riding arena will comprise a rectangle with a minimum size of 80 metres x 30 metres which should be flat and free of stones or objects which could endanger the competitors and consequently prejudice the jury’s assessment of them. A sandy surface is strongly recommended. The surface may also be grass or compacted if not too hard or slippery.

2. Classification
All penalties for faults committed during animal cutting and containment activities will be added to the time taken for the event.
The team score will be based on the addition of the total number of points awarded to the three highest placed riders in the same team.
The points will be awarded in accordance with the table set out in Appendix 1.
The winning team will be the team with the highest number of points.

3. Penalties for Faults Committed in Cattle Herding
The penalties, whenever a cow, other than the one being cut, oversteps the containment line are set out in the following table:

more than 12: 10 seconds
A penalty of 10 seconds will be applied whenever a helper oversteps the containment line.
Any cow cut from the herd, before its time, must be led back to the containment zone prior to stepping over the containment line.

4. Safety of Riders and Mounts
Under penalty of elimination for mishandling, a rider may not behave in such a manner as to endanger the safety of his mount or the cattle. Cattle prods may only be used if they do not injure the animals. Any signs of injury or traces of blood caused by the rider will lead to the competitor’s elimination.

Cattlework:
OFFICIEEL: Op de kampioenschappen wordt in teams van maximaal 4 personen het "Cattle Sorting" getoond. Ieder haalt een koe uit de kudde en brengt deze naar de overzijde, waar een kooi staat. De overige teamleden helpen om de kudde op zijn plaats te houden. Men mag gebruik maken van een stok (carrocha) om de koeien op te drijven. (zie onderstaand foto's...) Het verschil met Teampenning is dat IEDER een koe haalt, de ingang van de pen vrij makkelijk is en dat de koeien vaak niet genummerd zijn. Technisch gezien een heel stuk makkelijker dus. Omdat we in de Nederlandse WE (en op sommige Belgische locaties) toch met koeien willen werken (toch dé basis van de Working Equitation eigenlijk...) maar omdat teamverband in de praktijk nog wat moeilijk te realiseren is, hebben we bedacht om deze proef solo te doen. Hiervoor volgen we de regels van de Cattlepenningsport (uit de western) met enkele uitzonderingen: * Er wordt niet op tijd maar op stijl gereden. Men krijgt hier een minuut voor. Soms kan de organisatie besluiten dat er wel op tijd gereden wordt. De jury mag punten geven voor het geheel, ook als de koe niet in de kooi is als de tijd teneinde is, omdat in de nationala fase een goede stijl boven snelheid te prefereren is. Bij een snelle strakke proef binnen de tijd, worden voor deze prestatie extra punten toegekend. * De koeien zijn wel of niet genummerd. De jury kan bepaalde koeien uitsluiten als blijkt dat steeds dezelfde koe wordt gebruikt. - In tegenstelling met het originele WE cowwork, mag de koe NIET worden aangeraakt. (Eis van de dierenbescherming) Om veiligheidsredenen wordt er zonder stok gereden. Net als in Cattlepenning kan de ruiter gediskwalificeerd worden als de koe te ruw behandeld wordt! -Er kan gereden worden onder DTA regels, als het een DTA wedstrijd betreft. Zie DTA Zodra er voldoende ruiters zijn en mogelijkheden tot het vormen van teams, kan een organisatie ook een teamonderdeel uitschrijven. Hiervoor tellen de WE regels, m.u.v. de carracho, die algeheel in het koeienwerk in Nederland (en België) verboden is, in overleg met de dierenbescherming en voor algehele veiligheid van paard en andere ruiters. Voor het rijden in teamverband wordt per wedstrijd een tijd opgegeven. Stijlcriteria WE Cattlework (nationaal en internationaal): * Beoordeeld wordt de proffessionaliteit van de deelnemer, met respect voor de kudde. 1-Kalm de kudde benaderen 2-Afsplitsen en wegdrijven zonder verstoring van de kudde 3-De koe doelmatig en efficient opdrijven, zonder paniekreacties te veroorzaken 4-Het netjes plaatsen van de koe in de kooi 5-Teamwork, als er in teamverband gereden wordt. *De Cattlework moeilijkheden worden bepaald door: 1-Het formaat van de arena 2-De grootte van de kudde 3-De psychologische staat en leeftijd van de koeien 4-De inrichting van de kooi 5-De toegestane tijd 6-Het al dan niet hebben van verplichte doorgangen 7-Bij eventuele nummering, het selecteren van de juist koe(ien) Citaat uit de film Bolero met Bo Derek: "What's a Horse without a Bull..."
